Also, I will have different stories on Avatar, so one story might only have a few chappies while others might even get their own "Fic Book" on my blog.
CHANGES FOR THE BETTER
CHAPTER 1
Toph Bei Fong, heiress to the Bei Fong Hotels, was getting ready to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. Her parents had bought her everything she had wanted. But there was one thing she wanted that she could not have no matter how hard she begged. Her mother walked into her bedroom to find her blind yet beautiful daughter sitting on her windowseat pretending she could actually see what was outside.
"Dear," said Mrs. Bei Fong. Toph turned around to stare at her mother with her glossy green eyes. "Are you ready?" Toph gave her mother a fake smile although her mother thought she actually meant it.
"I am ready."
The tall, black haired girl stood up and walked to the door. Her mother was getting ready to help her, but she put her hand in her face. "I'm capable of finding my way around." Mrs. Bei Fong nodded and followed Toph out of her bedroom.
10 miles away, Prince Zuko of the firenation, who was twenty-one at the moment was getting ready for another day of searching for the Avatar. He had a good feeling today; just like he always did when he was getting ready to capture the Avatar. But today, he had something else in mind. He was getting married to Mai, the gothic girl he had been with since he was seventeen. Except there was a twist; they were getting married in the Earth Kingdom. Since he had been banned from the firenation (again), they had to get married there. He hated it. All earth benders were stinky peasants.
'Oh well, ' he thought. 'At least I can search for the Avatar for the first half of the morning.'
Zuko led his rhino down the ramp of his ship and hopped on. He gave it a hard kick and it galloped away. The troubled prince had heard from an old friend who was at war with the rest of the firenation by Oma Shu had told him he had spotted his bison going past the big city and heading for an island that was upsessed with flying pigs; the town right next to the place where he was getting married.
"Come on, hurry up you trashy animal," he muttered.
The rhino snorted. Zuko pulled on the reigns and stopped in front of a bulletin board that had all the news and wanted criminals on it. A quick reading wouldn't hurt. He had a few more hours until he had to head back.
"Toph Bei Fong celebrates her sixteenth year on the 28th day of the 3rd month. A party will be hosted and her parents will choose who she will marry," Zuko read to himself. He stared at the picture of the long haired green eyed girl. She was very attractive for a sixteen year old. She looked more like she was twenty-five. Zuko pulled the article off the board and stuffed it into his pocket. He didn't know why he had done that, but the hand had already made it's decision and had it safe and hidden.
All he hoped was that Mai didn't go looking through his clothes.
Toph sat at the end of the table, her mother on her left side, father on right. They were both talking to very wealthy people who wore the latest fashion. Toph slid her heels off and rested them on the gorund to see if she could pick up anyone's emotions. Most of the guests were happy, while others were nervous. She knew why; they were the boys who could end up as her husband.
"Toph, darling," her mother whispered. "Put your shoes back on."
She rolled her eyes and put the heels back on. They hurt her feet so badly. Didn't her mother understand that she was able to see with her feet? What was wrong with her parents?
Mr. Bei Fong stood up and tapped his spoon against his wine glass. "Could I have everyone's attention, please?"
They quieted down and stared at him. He cleared his throat three times before he continued.
"I would like it if all the young men between the ages of sixteen thru twenty-five would line up and prepare to get interviewed. At the end of the night, after my wife and I have made our decision, we will announce who will marry my daughter, Toph Bei Fong."
Toph frowned. All she wanted was a normal birthday party with some of her friends instead of this. She bet that already half the guys had condoms in their pockets waiting to be used.
The first boy was up. He was a slim eighteen year old who had absolutely no interest in being here.
"Hello, Salem," she said in her sweetest voice. She gagged in her head. "How are you today?"
"Bored, I guess," Salem shrugged.
'Hmm, that makes two of us,' she thought. "If you were to marry me, would you respect me and treat me kindly?"
"I guess."
"And protect me?
"Sure?"
Mr. and Mrs. Bei Fong stared at each other. Mrs. Bei Fong put a big red X over his name. "Thank you, Salem," said Mrs. Bei Fong.
Up next was Croker zi van Boni, some knuckle head who believed the world was square. Toph started firing questions at him but they were all the same answers Salem had given her. Boy after boy after boy, all of them with pathetic answers. Toph knew this would be a hard night for her.
Zuko stared blankly around the sanctuary. The minister was reading about all that love and care stuff. Mai was just chewing on her tongue with her arms crossed. She looked so bored.
"And in sickness and in health," he said.
Zuko couldn't stop thinking about that Toph Bei Fong girl. Her picture was still safely tucked away in his tux. He didn't know why he was so addicted to her... wasn't he in love with Mai?
"Do you, Mai, take Prince Zuko to be your husband?" asked the minister.
"Yeah sure, I guess." She shrugged.
"And do you, Prince Zuko, take Mai to be your wife?"
"Uhhh...."
That's when it hit him: he wasn't in love with Mai. He just thought he was because they both wore eyeliner, wrote suicide notes, and complained. He remembered reading at the bottom of the page of Toph's paper that men the ages of sixteen thru twenty-five could still show up between the hours of 5-8 p.m. It was already 7:35.
"Prince Zuko?" said the minister.
"Uhhh... I'm sorry, I don't."
Everyone gasped and watched as Zuko ran down the aisle and out the door. Mai didn't really seem to care; she still had that one girl's number from last night.
Toph was waiting for her parents to make up their minds already. Her feet were killing her and she was bored beyond bored. Her parents finally came back into the room. They were both smiling in a gay way.
"We have made our decision," said Mr. Bei Fong. Everyone waited in silence. Toph waited too. She was hoping it was some guy that would most likely cheat on her so she could then get a divorce. Or even better, a gay guy.
"Toph's husband will beeeeee," he continued.
Everyone was on the edge of their seats.
"Clent van der Kai!"
Everyone clapped politely... everyone but Toph. She stared at her parents in a hating way. Clent was a total jerk and they should know that. Before anyone could notice, Toph ran otu of there, crying.
Zuko walked up to the giant silver gates. He was greeted by two guards.
"Stop!" one said. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Going to try and become Toph Bei Fong's husband."
"Sorry, kid," said the other one. "Your late. Her parents already chose that Clent van der Kai guy."
Zuko sighed. He made a note to himself that if he ever met Clent, he'd shoot him. The sad prince walked away. He was walking along the trail when he heard a girl's voice.
"Sooooo," she said. "You wanted to be that Toph Bei Fong girl's husband."
Zuko stared at the girl sitting on the ground. She had her face hidden with a head scarf and was wearing a robe. She had a tan messenger bag next to her feet.
"Yeah, so? Why would you care?" Zuko asked.
"Oh, I just happen to know her," she told him.
Zuko's eyes widened in excitement. "Really? You do? Do you think you could get her to talk to me?"
She laughed.
"What's so funny?" he asked.
"You don't have to ask me if you can talk to her. You already are."
Zuko watched as she pulled the scarf off her face; she was even prettier up close. She had soft pale skin, full pink lips, glossy black hair, and a gorgeous smile. She was wearing a cream colored silk dress and her feet were bare. He also noticed that her eyes were mysteriously foggy.
"Hi," said Toph, grinning straight at him.
"Hi," he said nervously. He was nervous and glad at the same time.
"Take a seat." She patted the ground. Zuko obediantly did. He never thought he'd say this, but for once, earth benders weren't so bad.
